“Perhaps the earth can teach us, as when everything seems dead and later proves to be alive.”

Pastor, Pilgrimage Leader, Parent, 43
The earth can indeed teach us, if we’ll just slow down enough to pay attention. As a pastor and activist, a dad and a neighbor—I find that seeking nourishment in nature and finding spaces for silence are vital to maintaining inner balance and a healthy spiritual life—especially in these times. When we can set aside a particular time and space to open our hearts and renew our spirits—we find that our breathing is deeper and freer, our heart space grows wider, and our vision for what is possible expands.
Bryan is the pastor of Holland UCC, a growing, dynamic, justice-seeking community in Holland, MI. He facilitates open conversations on life and faith at Pub Theology Holland, and is a graduate of Shalem Institute’s Going Deeper: Clergy Spiritual Life and Leadership Program, which explores and teaches contemplative practice in a congregational setting. Bryan has led a contemplative pilgrimage to Iona, Scotland, and enjoys traveling with his wife Christy and four children.
